European tyre recycling has broken records with a recycling and recovery rate exceeding 91% in 2007, four percentage points more than the previous year, according to the European manufacturers association ETRMA. ‘This makes Europe as one of the most advanced region in the world in the recycling/recovery of tyres compared to for example Japan (89%) or Canada (80 %),’ the association says in a statement.For nearly 15 years, the European rate has followed an unstopped increase of the amount of tyres entering recycling/recovery treatment options. ... more

UK scrap tyre specialists Saltire Recovery and Sapphire Energy Recovery (SER) have signed a contract with auto service retailer Stapleton’s Tyre Services (STS) which may mean Saltire and SER receiving more than 1 million end-of-life tyres in each of the next three years. The contract came about after a chance meeting between the parties at the launch of Sapphire’s new tyre processing facility in Manchester in mid-2006. A joint venture between Lafarge Cement UK and Michelin, SER annually consumes more than 100 000 used tyres as a fuel for cement kilns while STS sells more than 4 million tyres per annum and takes in more than 1 million used tyres. ... more

United States | An engineered rubber powder called PolyDyne can replace a significant proportion of the oil needed for the manufacture of many synthetic rubber and other petrochemical products, according to industrial polymer manufacturer Lehigh Technologies, Inc. of Naples, Florida, USA. The company manufactures PolyDyne by grinding rubber from used tyres into an ultra-fine powder. ‘Seeing the vast amounts of waste in tyre junkyards across the USA inspired us to seek a solution for turning scrap tyres into a resource that can be recycled and manufactured into a new, useful material,’ says Lehigh’s Chief Operating Officer Anthony Cialone. His company suggests that anything from car parts to plastic refuse cans, as well as high-tech spray coatings and shoe soles, can be created using substantial loadings of engineered rubber powder derived from used tyres, thereby reducing the dependency on petroleum and saving half a billion gallons of oil each year.
